Little Owl Learning Centre is an early learning service located in the heart of Medicine Hat, AB at 423 4th Street SE. Our hours of operation are Monday – Friday 6:30am – 5:30pm. We have five classrooms in the Centre and accept children between the ages of 6mo. – kindergarten age.

Here at Little Owl Learning Centre we have adopted a unique approach to educating children, the classroom environment is viewed as the third-teacher. Educators reflect on their observations of the children’s play, identify what they are naturally interested in and add extensions and learning opportunities to the environment to enhance open discovery learning. Open discovery learning is an integral part of our programming here at Little Owl, during this time children are free to explore the classroom as they choose. All classrooms are equipped with a variety of loose parts and open-ended materials, these materials do not have set directions or expectations of how they must be used so children may reach deeper levels of cognitive thinking, problem solving and innovation through each play experience supporting a wide variety of play behaviours.

We believe in the power of the Reggio Emilia Approach. This approach was developed by the parents of the villages around Reggio Emilia, Italy after WWII. The people of Reggio Emilia wanted to give young children the tools and opportunities to become responsible citizens, analytical thinkers, and creative problem-solvers. This led to creation of an early childhood approach based on the principles of respect and community through hands-on exploration in a supportive and enriching environment.

Our approach is based on the fundamental belief that children are curious, capable, competent learners and that teachers are partners in their learning process. When teachers observe and listen carefully to children, they can provide meaningful experiences and create engaging learning environments.(14)

Each child’s success rests on a synchronicity in approach between Parents and Educators.

We strive to maintain open communication and involvement from all families. The likelihood of deep learning experiences to take place drastically increases if parents and teachers are working together in harmony.
